Gastric (stomach) cancer refers to malignancies that arise from the cells lining the stomach. Most cases are adenocarcinomas, but there are other less common types. Early-stage stomach cancer is often asymptomatic, making early detection a challenge.

Common Types of Gastric Cancer
  • Adenocarcinoma: More than 90% of gastric cancers, originating from the glandular tissue of the stomach lining.

  • Lymphoma: Cancer of the immune system tissue found in the stomach, accounting for up to 4% of cases.

  • Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST): Arises from connective tissue in the stomach.

  • Neuroendocrine (carcinoid) tumors: Originate from hormone-producing cells.

Symptoms
  • Indigestion or heartburn (dyspepsia).

  • Abdominal pain or vague discomfort above the navel.

  • Feeling bloated or full after eating small amounts.

  • Nausea and vomiting (sometimes with blood).

  • Loss of appetite and unintentional weight loss.

  • Tiredness, weakness, or anemia.

  • Black or blood-stained stools.

  • Trouble swallowing and swelling of the abdomen.

Symptoms often appear late and can mimic other digestive conditions.

Risk Factors
  • Age over 60; most commonly diagnosed in older adults.

  • Male sex (men have a higher risk than women).

  • Infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria.

  • Smoking and regular alcohol intake.

  • Diet high in salty, pickled, or smoked foods, and low in fruits/vegetables.

  • Obesity and chronic gastritis (stomach inflammation).

  • Pernicious anemia, family history of stomach cancer, certain genetic syndromes (FAP, Lynch, HDGC).

Prevention
  • Maintaining a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, low in processed and salty foods.

  • Quitting smoking and limiting alcohol consumption.

  • Treating and eradicating H. pylori infection.

  • Regular screening for those with a strong family history or hereditary cancer syndromes.

  • Managing chronic gastritis and anemia appropriately.

Early-stage detection is key but challenging due to vague initial symptoms. Persistent digestive issues, unexplained weight loss, and abnormal bleeding warrant medical evaluation
