🎗️ What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a condition whereby cells of the breast grow out of control and create a tumor that may expand (or spread out) to other areas of the body (metastasize). It normally begins in the ducts (ductal cancer) or lobules (lobular cancer) in the breast, where milk is produced or transported. Although it is predominantly found in women, men can develop breast cancer as well.

🧬 The Typical Breast Cancer.

1. Ductal Carcinoma of the Breast, Invasive Ductal (IDC)

  • Most common type (70–80%).

  • Starts in the milk ducts and progresses to the immediate breast tissue.

2. Invasive Lobular Carcinoma (ILC)

  • Begins in the milk-producing lobules and expands.

3. Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS)

  • Cancer that is not invasive and has remained within the milk ducts.

  • Thought to be an early type of breast cancer.

4. Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC).

  • Lacks estrogen and progesterone and HER2 receptors.

  • More violent and more difficult to cure.

5. HER2-Positive Breast Cancer

  • Has a good amount of HER2 protein.

  • Growth is rapid with a good response to targeted therapy.

6. Inflammatory Breast Cancer
  • Uncommon and violent; result in redness and swelling.

  • It is often confused with infection.

7. Breast Cancer Stage 4.
  • Cancer that has metastasized to other distant parts of the body (bones, liver, lungs, and so on).

⚠️ Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Symptoms of breast cancer can be different, and in the initial stages, there can be none. Common symptoms include:

  • A sonogram in the breast or underarm.

  • Alteration of size, shape, or appearance of the breast.

  • Puckering or dimpling of the skin.

  • Nipple leakage (particularly bloody)

  • Nipple inversion or pain

  • Rash, puffy, or scaly skin around the breast or the nipple.

  • Constant pain in the breast without menstruation.

  • Note: Not all lumps are cancerous, but any change must be examined by the physician.

Breast Cancer Risk Factors.

Certain risk factors are invariable, but some may be controlled.

✅ Major Risk Factors:

Unchangeable:

  • Being female

  • Age (risk rises beyond 40, particularly beyond menopause)

  • Breast or ovarian cancer in the family.

  • Exposure to radiation (particularly in childhood)

Lifestyle-related:

  • Being overweight or obese, particularly post menopause.

  • Alcohol consumption

  • Lack of physical activity

  • Replacement hormones (Hormone replacement therapy) HRT

  • Early menstruation (under the age of 12) or late menopause (after the age of 55).

  • Age at which the first child was born (after age 30) or childlessness.

🛡️ Prevention of Breast Cancer
  • Although not every case is preventable, the following measures can help a great deal:

🩺 Medical Prevention:
  • Routine screening (mammogram, clinical breast examination)

  • Genetic testing in individuals with a strong family history (BRCA1/2)

  • Preventive drugs (in high-risk people)

  • Preventive mastectomy (in some high-risk situations)

💪 Lifestyle Modifications:
  • Maintain a healthy weight.

  • Exercise regularly

  • Limit alcohol consumption

  • Avoid or reduce HRT (talk with your doctor)

  • Breastfeed if possible

  • Consume a healthy, vegetarian diet.
